January batch of new features
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:42:10 PM »
New batch of features has been added:

  • There is a new map icon displaying GeoCheckpoints placed by you. It may be useful especially for those who have placed multiple GCPs.
  • All map icons have been redesigned. You can better see exact GeoCheckpoint location now.
  • You can easily contact people who reported a problem with the GeoCheckpoint. On the page with reported problems, click the envelope icon and you will be able to send a private message to the user who reported the problem.
  • You can see the number of registered users and placed GeoCheckpoints at the homepage (updated once a day).
  • There are new statistics at http://www.geocheckpointing.com/statistics.php. If you are competitive (or curious), you can see how many GCPs has been found by others.
  • When you used to log your visit, the system automatically used the day of the log as the day of the GCP visit. Now you can select the date when you make the log.
  • There is a new, easier way how to download GPX files. On the map page you can download GPX file with all GCPs displayed on the map.
  • For those who use GeoCheckpointing and Geocaching GPX files together in Geocaching applications, may be useful following change. GeoCheckpoints are no longer displayed as traditional geocache, but as event cache. It will make easier to recognize what is a GCP and what is a cache. The event caches are very rare comparing with the traditionals (and probably most of you don't use them in the pocket queries), so this change makes possible to display GCPs in another way in Geocaching applications.

Thank you for all suggestions in the feedback section of this forum!

Thanks for the changes - very helpful!
I have a suggestion about the cache type though...I always manually change the cache type to virtual. We have many events in our area and that can get confusing. Virtuals, however, are becoming more and more rare as they can't be created anymore and are slowly be archived by reviewers if the owners are no longer active.

Well, I have made the change, lets see if this solution will be better.

In fact, I was deciding between virtual caches and event caches. I made a search in a few countries and found out the numbers of both cache types are quite the same. I expected most people will not download event caches in gpx format together with other cache types, however, it seems I was wrong. So hopefully this solution will be better than the previous one :)

Fantastic, Thanks for listening to the input :)  The new map icons are terrific also, as more and more GCP's are placed it really helps distinguish them from ones we've placed and ones we've yet to find.

Thanks for the change to Virtual for the type! I also like that the geocheckpoint # is preceded by GCP now in the code.
